Chile: 6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Maule Region

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck central Chile on Friday night, with its epicenter in the Maule region, authorities reported, causing no preliminary casualties or damage.

The quake occurred at 8:38 PM local time (11:38 PM GMT), at a depth of 114 kilometers, according to the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile.

It was also felt in the capital, Santiago, almost 200 kilometers north of the epicenter, according to witness reports and local media.

According to the National Service for Prevention and Response to Disasters (Senapred), the earthquake was felt in eight regions, from Coquimbo to La Araucanía, with varying intensities.

The Chilean Navy’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service said that the earthquake’s characteristics did not meet the conditions to generate a tsunami on the country’s coast.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.4.
